SUSTAINABLE COMMITMENT

Sustainability Policy of the Consortium for Tourism and Congresses of A Coruña

The management of tourism activity in the city of A Coruña has been carried out since its creation under the legal formula of the Consortium, with the participation of the City Council of A Coruña, the Chamber of Commerce and the Port Authority.

In its Statutes, adapted to the provisions of Law 27/2013 of 27 December, on the Rationalisation and Sustainability of Local Administration and Law 15/2014 of 16 September, on the Rationalisation of the Public Sector, by virtue of an agreement adopted on 28 November 2014, it is stated that it is an entity with its own legal personality for the fulfilment of its purposes subject to the law and its own Statutes (art. 2).

The Public Administration of assignment, for the purposes of the provisions of the Additional Provision Twentieth 1 of Law 30/1992, of 26 November, of the Legal Regime of Public Administrations and Common Administrative Procedure, is the City Council of A Coruña.

Among its aims are, among others, the carrying out of actions aimed at attracting and fixing tourism in Coruña (art. 41.b of its Statutes), the promotion of congresses by attracting, organising directly or in collaboration with other entities, congresses, both national and international (art. 4.1e of its Statutes) and in general promoting and boosting all those activities that in some way have the aim of promoting and developing tourism and congresses in the city of Coruña (art 4.1 g).

The CONSORTIUM OF TOURISM AND CONGRESSES OF A CORUÑA recognises that Sustainability is no longer an option or attribute but an undeniable commitment and that sustainable tourism can be a driving force for social and economic progress in the city of A Coruña with great potential to contribute to the improvement of the quality of life of its citizens and to the safeguarding of its natural and environmental resources and its tangible and intangible heritage.

The Consortium understands that the development of A Coruña as a sustainable destination is an integrated process that includes the public authorities of the destination, the citizens, its companies and services, and the mechanisms of promotion of the destination and communication with tourists. The final objective is to orientate the destination's tourism actions and policies towards sustainable development, as well as to generate synergies between local companies that favour the development of sustainable experiences and products, that encourage the respectful use of the city's natural and cultural heritage and that transmit the values of the destination and its identity through an enriching tourist experience, positioning the destination and its companies in the tourism market in a responsible way.

The sustainability policy of the TOURISM AND CONGRESS CONSORTIUM OF A CORUÑA will be committed to the principles that govern sustainability in the field of tourism, based on the guidelines emanating from the main international declarations and conventions on sustainable development, the World Charter for Sustainable Tourism ST+20, UNESCO, as well as the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and its Agenda 2030.

The establishment of this Sustainability Policy means establishing a roadmap to accelerate the transition of A Coruña towards a sustainable tourism model that aims to be honest and ambitious to achieve the highest standards of sustainability in a path of continuous improvement and commitment to compliance with the requirements that apply to each of the events.

In this sense, the CONSORCIO DE TURISMO Y CONGRESOS DE A CORUÑA initiates in practice the transition towards sustainable tourism with the implementation of a management system following the requirements of the ISO/IEC 20121:2013 standard for Event Sustainability Management Systems with the aim of guaranteeing that its own events will be organised taking into account the sustainability issues that apply to them and the principles of:

  • Inclusiveness, by taking into account all stakeholders involved and their views,
  • Integrity, by taking into account ethical aspects when making decisions
  • Diversity, by considering the needs of all participating groups,
  • Transparency, by making relevant information on events available to all interested parties, and
  • Good governance, taking into account the impact on social, environmental and economic issues in decision making.
